An official online platform of South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Saturday debunked online rumors that linked a female driver, who reportedly flashed her credentials to force another vehicle to yield in a traffic dispute, to a local public security official, CCTV News reported.
The incident has drawn widespread attention on Chinese social media platforms. The Guangxi online rumor refutation platform said that claims linking the female driver to a local police official are false, and the woman in the video is not the same person as an official surnamed Lan, as rumored, per the CCTV News report.
According to earlier media reports, a netizen in Fangchenggang, Guangxi, recently claimed that on the afternoon of July 22, he was threatened by a woman driving a Mercedes-Benz during a traffic dispute, according to a report on the People’s Daily app on Saturday.
The netizen claimed that during the traffic encounter, he had already yielded, but the woman demanded he reverse to let her pass. When he refused, she brandished a credential and said that “otherwise, I’ll use my ID!” He subsequently reported the incident to local police and the 12345 hotline, according to the report.
On Friday, the border management detachment of the Fangchenggang Public Security Bureau in Guangxi issued an official statement, noting that on Friday morning, some netizens and media outlets posted a video claiming that a female Mercedes-Benz driver flashed her credentials to force another vehicle to yield and that local police officers visited the netizen’s home to demand the deletion of posts and an apology.
“The public security authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have formed a task force to investigate. We appreciate the oversight from the public and media regarding our law enforcement activities,” the statement said, according to the report on the People’s Daily app.
